The New York Times featured a great piece on the essential starter pieces for a “No-Frills Kitchens” a few weeks ago, and I finally got around to watching the accompanying Minimalist video podcast. With a budget of just under $300, Mark Bittman takes you into Bowery Restaurant Supply to find everything you need for most cooking tasks.

Microsoft Surface: Coffee Table Computing

In case you missed yesterday’s big launch, Microsoft released Microsoft Surface, a dynamic, multi-touch, “natural” interface initially aimed for use at hotels, kiosks, and casinos. I didn’t think anyone was close to releasing something like this onto the market, and it was quite a surprise to see Microsoft leading the way with this new combination of hardware/software.

Microsoft launched a site showing the capabilities, history, and design of Surface, and don’t miss the video coverage and tech demo from Popular Mechanics.

My Blueberry Nights

Wong Kar-wai’s newest film debuted at Cannes last week. His first English-language film, My Blueberry Nights stars Natalie Portman, Norah Jones, Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn, and Jude Law.

Hi-res screen captures from the film are up at /film. Here’s the trailer and more from imdb. Hopefully the film gets a decently sized release here, because it would be great to finally see a Wong Kar-wai film in a theatre.

The Definitive Guide to Semantic Web Markup for Blogs - With all the talk of web standards in recent years, many would assume that most popular blogging and content managements systems would be leading the way in adhering to Web standards and search engine optimization practices. Unfortunately, most fail the basic XHTML tests. Pearsonified offers a helpful resource for all the web designers looking to markup correctly.

Design by Grid - Here’s another resource/showcase for grid-design on the web. Full of tutorials, helpful articles, and don’t miss the grid calculator.

Darwin Correspondence Project - The University of Cambridge just recently launched an astounding archive of thousands of Charles Darwin’s letters.

It took ten years to carry out a systematic search for additional material, to obtain copies, and to transcribe all known letters into an electronic format. This resulted in the creation of the extensive computerised archive which now forms the basis for editorial work, and of the Project’s Online Database… To date, the project has located, both in libraries and in private collections, a total of around 14,500 letters exchanged by Darwin and nearly 2000 correspondents around the world between 1821 and his death in 1882.

Visit the about section to learn more about the project’s history and the amount of work involved.
